Classes & Workshops

At the Spool Yard we have something for everyone — from the absolute beginner to the veteran sewist. See the expandable list on the right side of this page for more details about our different class offerings.

No matter where your interests lie, we have something for you. Participants will have full access to the studio equipment, most supplies are included in the class fee, but if additional fabric or supplies are required, that will be noted in the individual class listing and a materials list will be sent to participants before the class begins. Look below for details on our upcoming classes and workshops.

We are always looking for other creatives who have a skill they would like to share with the community.  We will be offering specialty classes as we find these wonderful people who practice in various textiles.

If there's a particular class you're eager to attend at our studio, don't hesitate to contact us or take a moment to complete this form. This ensures you'll be added to the waitlist for future workshops or allows you to suggest an alternative time for a current or past class.

  • You will learn the foundations of a sewing practice, such as fabric choice, pattern reading, cutting, seams and seam finishing, and use of a domestic sewing machine. In each lesson series you will make a number of projects that incrementally build on your skills. We have classes designed for kids, teens and adults.

  • Once you have the foundations of a sewing practice under your belt, we offer a number of classes to develop your skills further. These classes are designed to teach you order of construction, simple pattern adjustments, sewing in the round, curves, pockets, casings, zippers as well as serger use for knit fabrics. In the Garment Construction Series you will find classes for drawstring pants, woven tops, t-shirt, sweatshirts, joggers, PJ’s, hats to name a few. Many of our one day workshops are designed for a beginner Sewist.

  • These classes are for Sewists that are looking to hone their skills. Each class is designed to teach particular skills in fitting or more advanced construction techniques such as button holes, plackets, collars, cuffs, dart manipulations, invisible zippers etc.

  • We offer a number of pattern drafting classes that teach you how to draft a basic skirt block, a bodice block, or a pant block. We also teach how to copy from an existing garment to a workable pattern and how to manipulate drafted blocks to achieve custom design details.

  • We offer a variety of single day workshops on seasonal items, specific skills, or small projects. Mini Classes are short workshops in combination with an open sewing session, so you can pick up a few new skills and then stay and practice in the studio.

  • Visit our Materials Page to view what supplies are needed for each class.
