Materials & Supplies

While many of our classes include all supplies, some of our garment classes do require you to purchase materials for the first class. Please check the guide below to see what you will need.

We have a curated selection of fabrics, elastic and thread at the studio that we source specifically for the classes that you are welcome to browse before your class. When choosing thread, we recommend polyester all purpose thread for garments. If you can't find an exact colour match for your thread, select a shade darker rather than lighter. Please note that it is best to have pre-washed your fabrics to reduce shrinkage in your final garment. If you purchase materials at Fabricland, mention the Spool Yard and receive the members discount.

For purchasing yarn, Jen at All Tied Up is a great go-to for yarn and will help you make an appropriate selection for your class.

  • Light- to medium-weight fabrics with no stretch will work exceptionally well. Linen, cotton voile, silk crepe, seersucker, tencel, rayon-pretty much anything with some drape will work for this pattern. Lighter weight fabrics will add more drape, and heavier fabrics will result in a more structured garment.

Structured fabric will have more dramatic volume and drapier fabrics will have more fluid movement. For beginner sewists, we recommend using lightweight cotton.

  • For the Studio Tunic, we recommend a mid-weight woven fabric. Some wonderful choices are mid-weight linen and chambray, cotton twill, Essex linen or light canvas, in solids or prints.

The drape or hand of the fabric will significantly impact the look and fit of the final garment – softer fabrics like washed linen will fall gently for a relaxed, garden vibe, and more sturdy fabrics like light canvas or twill will enhance the oversized, utility look and the A-line silhouette. (If you choose a heavier weight fabric, you might want to use a lighter fabric for your facings to reduce bulk.) More confident sewists might choose a viscose-linen blend for a really luxurious texture.
